The Bible talks about a place that holds some really nasty evil angels, including Satan himself. It is called the “Bottomless Pit”. It is a place of confinement for these evil beings and a place that the evil angels themselves do not desire to go. When Jesus was casting out the legion of evil angels from a man, these evil beings besought Jesus that he would not send them into the deep. (Luke 8:31). Jesus sent them into some swine. The Bottomless Pit appears most prominently in the book of Revelation. It comes from the Greek word “abussos,” meaning “bottomless” or “immeasurable depth”. Our English word for it is “abyss”. The Bible talks about the beast being there, Satan being there for a time, and the evil angels from Genesis chapter 6 being there. Revelation 9 talks about angels being released from the pit in the end times to torment wicked men for 5 months.
One of the great things about the Biblical description of the Bottomless Pit is that it shows the authority that the Lord God has over these wicked spirits, including the leader of these evil beings, the devil himself. These evil angels can only push their wickedness on mankind and God’s creation according to the degree that the Almighty allows it. Praise the Lord God that the ultimate end of these wicked beings and wickedness is eternal destruction. It is apparent from the Biblical account that the devil and his angels know that their destruction is coming. In Revelation 12:12 we see that the devil comes against the inhabitants of the earth with great wrath because he knows that he has only a short time left.
The purpose of these Biblical accounts of these extremely wicked beings, their freedom to do or not to do wicked things against men, is to show how profoundly wicked that sin is. Just the fact that these highly wicked angels are confined in a place called bottomless reveals to us that sin itself is bottomless. The Lord God is ultimately constraining the depth of evil and spiritual darkness and profound wickedness that can take place on this earth. The wickedness and sin that men could ultimately commit is far beyond our imagination. It is truly bottomless, and it eventually leads to what Matthew 24:12 calls a time where iniquity shall abound. It gives us a picture of the increase and multiplying of sin. In verse 10 we are given a small window of insight into this abounding iniquity. It says, “And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another. You cannot deny that we see this all around us in our day and age. Families are divided because of who they voted for in politics. Fights break out because of what sports team you support. Men murder other men because of ideological stances. People are offended easily and carry a grudge that blossoms to hate. Truly sin is abounding.
Yet, there is good news! Romans 5:20 tells us, “Where sin abounded, grace did much more abound.” No matter how great our sin is, no matter how bottomless, how abounding it is in our lives, God’s grace is greater. His grace much more abounds over our sin. This is the gospel. This grace is provided for us through Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 says this, “Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; (2) By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. (3) For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; (4) And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures.” Ephesians 2:8,9 says, “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast.” God’s grace super abounds over our abounding sin. Our sin is too strong for us. The wickedness of this world and the darkness of the devil is too strong for us. We need that super abounding grace of the Lord Jesus Christ. His death, burial, and resurrection provide the overcoming victory for us against the chains of sin found within us.
Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved. (Acts 16:31) The super abounding grace of God will be accredited to your account. (Romans 5:21) You will be made the righteousness of God in Christ. (2 Corinthians 5:21) Your sins will be blotted out. (Acts 3:19) They will be removed from you as far as the east is from the west. (Psalms 103:12) The Lord will remember them no more. (Hebrews 8:12) He will cast them into the depths of the sea. (Micah 7:19)
Amen! Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ today!
